A concrete driveway is a structure with a heavy job, so ours are built like one. A driveway at grade on private land needs no LADBS building permit. At the curb, the city's apron spec is Class 520-C-2500 concrete, a 2,500 psi class, poured at least 4 inches thick in R-1 and R-2 zones. On your side of the line, our bids write out the slab thickness, the control joint layout and the rebar or fiber reinforcement, and that is the spec you get in writing. Under the slab sits compacted base, because LA's expansive clay moves with the seasons and a slab poured on loose dirt cracks wherever it wants.
Finish is your call. Interlocking pavers are the driveway that repairs itself. A vehicular-rated paver system on a base compacted in lifts flexes with clay movement and tree roots instead of cracking through, and if a utility trench or a root ever disturbs the field, the same stones go back down without a scar. Clay brick is the flagship. A herringbone or basket-weave brick driveway laid to a custom gate is the kind of approach visitors remember, and it suits the older streets of Pasadena, San Marino and Glendale better than anything cast. We lay full brick fields and brick borders and aprons on concrete drives, with the brick work tied into pilasters, steps and planters so the whole front of the house reads as one build.
Hillside driveways are half wall, half surface. A long climbing drive in Sherman Oaks or Burbank needs a base that will not creep downhill, drainage that catches runoff before it reaches the garage, and often a retaining wall holding one edge. We build the wall and the driveway together, so the footing, the drainage and the surface agree with each other instead of arguing later.
Edges finish the job. Curb cuts and apron work in the public right of way carry their own approvals, and larger pours go through plan check, so the permit path goes on the quote before anything is priced.
