Property lines, privacy and the Ventura Boulevard streets
Most Sherman Oaks block work is boundary work: a shared property line wall replaced with the neighbor's agreement, a backyard wall raised for privacy where two-story construction moved in next door, a front courtyard wall that turns a setback into usable space. The flats from Chandler Estates to Magnolia Woods keep the ground simple, which keeps footings predictable and price conversations short.
Height and placement rules still apply, and the City of Los Angeles has its own limits for front, side and rear yard walls. We flag what your wall can be at the site visit, handle the permit question honestly, and build to the line so a boundary wall never becomes a boundary argument.
Finishes that match the house, and walls that survive the shake
Gray block is the structure, not the look. Sherman Oaks walls get finished: smooth or textured stucco tinted to the house, stone or brick veneer on the street-facing runs, precision or slump block where the material is the style. Caps in poured concrete, stone or brick tie the wall into the rest of the hardscape.
This part of the Valley also remembers 1994. Unreinforced garden walls fared badly in the Northridge earthquake, and plenty of quick patches from that era are aging out now. New walls go up reinforced and grouted, and if your existing wall is cracked or leaning, our masonry repair side reads it honestly: repair what is sound, rebuild what is not.
